Castro informs virrey continuously of progress in pacification of Indians; Toledo informs gobernador Emparan that several Indians requested peace at Riogrande presidio, offered to return eight hostages in exchange for Indian prisoners; virrey instructs to accept peace offer. Gutierrez gives virrey information concerning Santa Rosa incident of may 1, 2; Indians came for peace treaty, ended fighting. Report of dead, wounded in incident. Virrey gives opinion of facts to Castro, asks for full explanation of how 11 Indians could wreak such havoc. Emparan passes on to virrey Gutierrez's warning that Indians may take revenge, military should prepare to prevent attack. Virrey requests detailed report of successes in colony despite Indians. (D. Summary
Series of letters between Castro and virrey concerning relations with northern Indians in provincias; Castro doubts peace treaty will last because those who participated in agreements were Capitancillos without importance to other tribes; Castro considers it better to declare war. Virrey advises caution in Castro's actions against Indians, as once war starts it will be difficult to stop; warns that Indians are wise in matters of war, but he will support Castro's decisions. Nava, Castro inform virrey of tactics they are planning against Indians. Castro reports military movements by gobernador of Nuevo Santander, improved relations with Nava. Virrey approves several of Castro's tactics against Indians. (D. Bautista, April 1990)

Virrey's instructions for comandantes of provincias de oriente, Poniente. Virrey orders Nava to check and report on Indian situation in oriente. Castro informs virrey that he has been notified of Nava's nomination to comandante of other provincias and lists instructions received; virrey orders Castro to tell him when he is ready for nomination. Questionnaire from Castro with 11 questions, answers from Nava written in. Castro makes suggestions concerning provincias to virrey, who disagrees. Detailed explanation of history of comandancia general of provincias, why the division, who was in charge, why Nava and Castro are each comandantes of different areas; virrey suggests Castro pay no attention to what he hears in capitol, his instructions will be given when he arrives in Poniente. Summary
Several letters from Castro to virrey requesting instructions or sending information about the Indian enemies; Castro reports that enemy tracks are everywhere, that he urgently needs Nava's troops. Informs virrey that famous story of capitan Tovar killing two Indian leader in battle is not true; virrey requests summary of the facts. Castro questions validity of Galvez's tactical instructions because Indians now know presidio's weak points; virrey partially agrees. (D. Bautista, April 1990)

Castro informs virrey that capitanes are instructed to treat Comanches well as they are organizing campaign against Apaches; detailed report of battle against Lipanes, Mezcaleros. Virrey replies in support of Castro's tactics, plans. Castro requests promotions for military in active duty, virrey agrees. Important letter from Mexico City instructing Castro how to handle delicate situation with Indians; gobernador of Texas informs Castro that he believes there are spies in Texas sending military information to Lipanes; Castro suggests investigation. Letter from Castro explaining to virrey why he wants to give armaments to friendly Indians of north. Military reports of companias presidiales y volantes. Letter giving Castro responsibility for decisions in matter of Indians in four provincias of his jurisdiction. Castro describes his living situation in those provincias to virrey, who replies that he will support Castro's decisions. (D. Bautista, April 1990)
