Homer Shantz Travel Notes, July 31-August 12, 1919
Travel notes pages 36 - 38. Details happenings on the ship enroute from St. Vincent to Capetown. One specific occasion is a celebration after crossing the equator, especially for those who have not previously done so. "The initiation consisted of being required to drink a wine glass full of sea water, being properly decorated and shaved...then being thrown backwards into a large tank of sea water and properly ducked by a couple of husky seamen." Photographs are included that show the temporary tank they use to dunk the initiated men into.
