Rodriguez for capitancy in Tupson and other two presidios because Azuela, fronteras capitan, has died from accident; Rodriguez' service record provided. Soler selected as interim capitan of primera compania volante de Nueva Viscaya with annual salary of 2000 pesos. According to Ugarte y Loyola, service record of Soler as Ayudante inspector favorable, but has left Californias due to scandolous love affair which provided poor example to mission Indians; Ugarte y Loyola also selects Soler for interim capitancy in Tupson, and orders him to reunite with his wife. Correspondence from Mendoza to virrey, mostly concerning reduccion of Seri pueblos on Isla Tiburon; successful conclusion of peace treaty with Seris and Pimas, although notes some isolated Cases of continued hostilities; notes difficulties in reduccion of Papagos due to their excellent mastery of bow and arrow; recounts efforts to exterminate Apaches, to contract alliance with other tribes against Apaches; peace treaty broken by Seris leading to conclusion by Mendoza that they will never be reduced and requests for more arms to help exterminate them. Also includes documents concerning murder case against Figueroa. Mendoza orders expedition to explore area around Altar. Letter from fray Gonzalez to virrey concerning repartimiento of Indians in Rio Yaqui area. Complains that this process is the main obstacle to evangelization efforts of missions in Sonora. Notes that forcing Indians to work in mines away from home Villa promotes adulterous behavior, and thus petitions that marriage documents should be brought to work in mines. Complains that Indians cannot support their families because they are not paid for travel time to the mines, which can exceed a month. Also complains that time worked in mines disrupts work in fields, thus leaving Indians unable to pay tribute to church. (A. Tukey, August 1989)

Series of testimonies regarding charges leveled against Joseph Gonzalez by his men of adultery, failure to instruct soldiers in proper use of weapons, mistreatment of soldiers and their wives, and public drunkenness. Very repititous. (A. Tukey, July 1988)

Series of letters relating results of military trials. Crimes reported include rape, infidelity, slander and defamation, disobedience, and perjury. When no conviction was made, accuser was jailed for perjury. Includes Maldonado's complaint against Emparan for not rewarding pension to compensate for her Husband's death.
