Summary
Fray Bazo warns of impeding uprising among Indians at junta de los Rios missions, noting sus desordenes, Mas de lo Comun, assi en bailes embriagueses de Peiote, Tlatoles, y otras acciones, (note indication of Indian drug use), and asks that presidio be established there. Gobernador Caravajal conducts investigation of rumor, told by Indian gobernadores of Julimes, Tapacolmes pueblos that junta de los Rios Indians were quietos, that many were muy ladinos, and that these Indians frequently migrated south to work in Chihuahua mines, haciendas. Indian gobernadores of junta de los Rios missions meet with Carvajal, state that rumor is false and declare their loyalty to the crown. Carvajal, concludes that although junta de los Rios Indians are at peace, nevertheless a presidio in the area would be of grandissima utilidad to contain hostile Indian raids. (T. Sheridan) (1976)

Summary
Canito Charged with murder and robbery as leader of combined band of Indians (Pimas, Jocomes, xuma and Janos). His state appointed lawyer does well, getting the sentence reduced from death to 2 years at hard labor, by appealing to the governor. An excellent example of Spanish judicial system and how Indians were treated in it. Part of his salvation is his conversion to catholocism while in jail. (T. Barnes) (1976)

Summary
Ugarte y Loyola informs of judicial, administrative, spiritual, economic, and defensive conditions in Sonora and Nueva Vizcaya. Notes problems in judicial branch including inexperience of secondary judges; lack of prisons, lawyers to consult with, and scribes to handle judicial proceedings; costs of prisons, paper, mail, etc.. Reports (f.30) of robberies and murders committed by Apaches and others, including bands of Taraumaras escaped from their mission. Proposed creation of a high court (f. 31.5). Discussion of founding capital city of 6 provincias (f. 32.5) and its relation to comandante general's residence and site of high court. Most advantageous site would be in San Bartholome Valley. Salt production and prices (f. 34). Report (35.5) that spiritual of gospel deeply affected. Two letters praising the 70-folio documentation of all details of five main missions in Nuevo Santander (Actual document appears on ff.336-406 of this volume), praising the missions themselves. These letters serve as annotated bibliography of preceeding document (including folio numbers for specific topics, as well as adding some further information. Concerns conversion, baptism, deaths of Indians at missions (f.409, F.415). Mentions assigning land to Conca mission (412); more than 4000 Pames at Rioverde, Tampico (414); all five missions established in 1744 (417). Frequent mention of key missionaries. (A.
