Condition of those provinces (i.e. Sonora), in which Bucareli mentions various problems such as business practices of unscrupulous comerciantes espanoles, negros y pardos; depopulation of placer mines, land tenure and grazing rights problems, etc., discusses how indian population is adversely affected by abovementioned issues; orders sastre, Corbalan, to do everything in their power to correct these abuses. Summary
Concerns the internal treasurer of Chihuagua, instructions to him to precharge 1/2 percent on bills of exchange as per Nava; letter requesting sums of money for the royal treasuries of Arispe and Chihuahua; the preceeding abstract is part of an index of letters written in 1796 concerning military finances which traces correspondence between the real tribunal de Cuentas, junta Superior and others, ff. 257-260 illedgible, Series resumes being legible with ff. 0261; index of quadernos concerning the assets used to pay salaries of troops, employees, and synods, number of quadernos indexed is 21, they begin with the year 1773, quadernos dealt with such things as reforms taken in procedure to promote efficiency , the establishment of accounts, tobacco, change of die-stamp on money, reconciling entries, establishment of Pagaduria in Arispe in order to pay troops, methods of reimbursement, establishment of Pagaduria for payment of synods to missions, information on salaries, sums of money needed to quell Indian rebellions. Chrisanto goes to Tiburon, returns with mulato Cavesilla bien malo,5 families- 25 people. Accompanied by 5 Tiburones seeking pardon and permission to remain on Island. All rebel Seris have taken refuge on Tiburon, fearing Piato attack, except Marcos, 4 families, who returned to mainland because of lack of meat on Island. After 2 aguazerus, Anza leaves in pursuit of Piatos. Another detachment pursuing Piatos lose 5 horses who die of thirst while 8 men suffer heat prostration. Water carried in botas. 23 families of suaquis o sibubapas reduced in Belem- only 6 left and they're ready to surrender because of lack of water, death of Thomas, Paderon campaign against Piatos first priority including possible invasion of Cerro Prieto in October. Anza, Vildosola, 120 troops pursue rebels probably Seris, to Marismas. Tracks at Tastiota but no water at Pozo Salado. Men, horses, 24 hours without water. Troops have to turn back. All Aguajes except Cajon de corsari dry. Bergosa, 60 troops dispatched to pursue Suaqui rebels 6 Suaqui warriors killed, as well as 3 women, 2 kids, including 2 cavesillas los Mas obstinados, one-paderon- a gentile, the other- Thomas-former gobernador of Suaqui and autor de la sublevacion de su su nacion. 17 Suaqui families-62 people-reduced at Belen only 43 Piato families remain in rebellion. Only 48 Pima Altos de Arco y flecha left, yet only 2 Pima families took advantage of pardon. Rancherias of Pima capitanes Vipisi and Guejuriguchi still at large. Summary
Unsuccessful campaign against Piatos. However, Vildosola attacks Suaquis, killing 12 men, 4 women, taking 14 prisoners. Superior fire power of Spaniards took field. Later 30 Suaquis with families- 83 people- surrendered, reduced to Velem, antigua Morada de esta nazion. Pimas Altos, described as mas obstinados of rebels, ask for pardon. After stern lecture, pardon granted, but Pimas don't show up at appointed time. Troops, then dispatched to chase rebels during pitahaya harvest. (T. Sheridan) (1980)
