Summary
Two lists of Apaches de Paz at Bacoachi. One gives the name of the Head of the household with the age, sex and relation of others in the family and then totals for men, women, boys and girls. 126 Apaches de Paz at Bacoachi. The 2nd list shows mortality among the Apaches de Paz since December 3, 1786. Again names, and age and sex breakdown are given but in addition the deaths are divided into categories of violent and natural. There were 41 deaths in the 2 year period. Excellent document for demography and names of individual Indians. (T. Naylor) (1977) and (D. Marksz, June 1 1987)

Since Rengel found it impossible for Indians to be forced to live in pueblos, it was agreed they be permitted to establish rancherias in Sierras near presidios. In order to maintain control, Indians who had made peace would be issued licenses, and those caught without one could be captured or killed. (D. Marksz, June 1987)

Summary
A group of Apaches de Paz under chief Chiquito rebel near Bacoachi. Loyal groups aid Spaniards in punishing them. These three letters tell also of campaigns in Sonora and near El Paso using Indian auxiliaries. There is information on chiefs, rancherias and a very interesting description of some rebel Apache medicine men performing ceremonies from a leather bag full of dolls and idols made of feathers. Much of this same volume, written from El Paso in 1787-8. (T. Naylor, 1977) and (D.uhlman, 1988)

Summary
Ugalde leads a campaign against Mescaleros and others in spring and summer of 1787. Several engagements and Spaniards penetrate as far as the Rio Puerco of New Mexico. Information on Mescalero customs, life, bands and leaders. Ugalde closes his final letter with a most revealing understatement- the Indians along this frontier understand how to launch surprise attacks on our troops in both mountains and plains. This sad but true fact has been repeatedly verified in Nueva Vizcaya and Sonora. (T. Naylor, 1977) and (D. Marksz, June 1987)

Detailed background information about numbers of Indians, location, livelihood, intertribal alliances and kinship, sources and types of weapons, etc. Suggestions for best course of action in subduing Apache groups, gaining alliances with naciones del norte. Warning that any alliance with Lipanes against Indians del norte would be harmful; previous peace with Lipanes has been deceptive. Documents deal with E. Barry's request to be allowed to marry M. de la Paliza. Copy of testimony by several people that Paliza is legitimate daughter of J. a. Lopez de la Paliza and C. Gil de Corona. Detailed testimony by several persons of limpieza de sangre of la Paliza lineage. Lineage is traced back to Spain with mention of Noble background of family; mentions that in lineage there is no bad blood, such as that of moors, jews or other castes. (J. Tapia, March 1988)
