Highly critical of the local missionaries, who are blamed for the poverty of the citizenry. They spend too much time with the Indians. They don't allow the Spaniards to have estancias, saying that these would interfere with the Indians Milpas. The missionaries possess more arms than do the soldiers. Requests that P. Fr. People and missionaries of Santa Fe in cabildo meeting name Musquia procurador of New Mexico to petition from viceroy division of presidio among towns of Sandia and Sevilleta, establish between them from north to south Spanish and Indian towns to better control pacified Indians, help with agriculture and better defense from Apaches. Due to the present governor's ineptness, the Zunis and Zacatecos have returned to idolatry, the Indians of this province have revolted (one padre having been killed), the entire harvest of the Indians amounts to only 2,000 fanegas of corn and wheat. (R. Perez) (1977)

(A. Dell'acqua, may 13, 1987) Baeza forces Indians to work on textiles, paying them 1/2 real for 4 reales work. They are forced to gather cotton for his mills. He refuses to support missionary efforts with the military; Zuni has consequently fallen back into idolatry. (R. Perez, 1977)

States that the Indians receive in exchange for six fanegas of Pinon only one cow, which is worth only three pesos in that area. This is unfair due to the great distances they must travel to gather Pinones (60 leagues) and also due to the great risk involved from the enemy. (R. Perez) (1977)

A Ladino of castillian tongue arrives in El Paso and tells Spaniards that his fidelity to them nearly cost him his life. He tells of revolt conspiracy and present state of affairs in New Mexico, as well as of Pueblo-Apache relations. Don Luis Tupata is present leader of pueblos, and he and his henchmen have killed persons siding with Spaniards and will not allow catholicism to be practiced or Spanish language to be spoken. (C. An account of contact between Spaniards and two tribes, Jumanes and Shulimes. These two live close by, are friendly to each other and Spaniards, trade with Spaniards, and wish to have Spaniards come and aid them in their war with Apache. A native account of arrival of Spaniards is given. The two tribes ask Spaniards, represented by 10 Jumanas captains, to return to their lands. A list of trade goods is given. Indians also wish some religious to accompany and baptize them. (C. Briggs) (1975)

A Humana Indian called Sabeata in native tongue and Don Juan in Spanish comes to El Paso on request of his chiefs to express friendship with Spaniards and to ask on behalf of his nation and their friends and neighbors julimas for missionaries to care for christians and to baptize 10,000 souls seeking this aid. They also wish assistance fighting nearby Apache. A miracle in which a cross descends from heaven and aids them in fighting is told.
