Discourse between the governor of Sonora and the viceroy concerning various matters of provincial administration as to absent viceregal proclamations concerning issuance of new coinage, mail franchises, and announcement of birth of Infante Carlos Clemente (ff. 309-315). Concerning gubernatorial visita Colonel of provincial militias of Pardos y Blancos of several jurisdictions to Juan Antonio Caneda, Vecino of Rosario; brief letter, written at Mazatlan stating that, Sastre, as governor, will protect and give assistance to missionaries, destroy abuses committed against Indians... etc. Letters written at Culiacan and Alamos discuss order to send viceroy intendente Corbalan's financial account of military expedition of Sonora; response to viceroy's order that said intendente make visita of mines of province; formation of flying company under command of O'Conor to put down Indian unrest in Chihuahua (See below); governor's suggestion that if Indian named Calixto does not mend his rebellious ways, then prison sentence be considered (315-335). Letters written at Horcasitas discuss governor's order stating that copy of letters from presidial commanders be sent directly to viceroy (336,337). Sastre suffers stroke effecting right arm and leg (339,340). Informes concerning spiritual and temporal life at missions in upper and Lower Pimerias; included is number of inhabitants, births, deaths, etc; means of livelihood of inhabitants, and religious state of affairs. Documents describe depredations due to inhospitable climate and Indians (i.e. Apaches), and also discuss feasibility of uniting outlying populations into larger groups to facilitate civil, religious administration. Most viceroy by Croix for two thousand men to bring peace to provincias, documents against capitan Barrios and his removal, naming of capellanes to presidios, requests of salary advancements from religious personnel and military personnel. Also, total commercial freedom in Americas with cultivation, collection and transportation of pepper and Tabasco to Spain, prohibiting Duran and Chavez to travel to Spain again without first requesting viceroy's permission, orders to transfer Queipo to Spain to live with wife, issuance of new coined money to Cajas reales and lists of personnel who have finished their service and retired due to injuries and insanity. Troops deployed in areas rumored to be inhabited by Indians. Description of conditions of campaigns and daily events. Difficulty finding water for horses. General lack of water in area. Area appear calm. Troops divided and dispersed but did not encounter unfriendly Indians or engage in battle. (M. Dannemiller, October 1988)

Document presents daily account of troop movement and locations and activities of Indians in area. Ordered to enter from south, began exploration of area. Found underpopulated Rancheria. Provides description of area where Indians washed and collected water. Found other rancherias with extreme hunger due to limited squash and other vegetables to provide nutrients needed for the work and extensive walking done by Indians. At one Rancheria, Indian guard yells warning of advancing troops causing Indians and horses to flee. Describes bloody wars to take property from Indians outside San Marcos. says conditions calm in Iglesias. As troops arrived in new places they were named and reported to conde. Viceroy Croix orders civilian authorities of area to end disputes over water rights. Documents and dispositions go back and forth as ranches belong to two different municipalities. Owner of ranch claims cattle drink water from his ojo de agua which is reserved for his sheep; believed that if cattle drinks from same water sheep will die. (A. Dell'acqua, December 1987)
