Chiricahuas send 2 emissaries to Tapia telling him to come to Sierra del Medio to get Felix Guerra, Spanish soldier held by Chiricahuas. At same time, emissary from Gilenos, Mimbrenos under Nataneju, Pachateju, el Surdo tells Tapia Chiricahuas planning a trap. Tapia assembles 72 soldiers, including militia from El Paso under Miranda, Opatas under general Varela, Marches to el Medio. Chiricahuas ransom guerra for 10 horses, then 300 of them appear to attack Spaniards. Because of ruggedness of territory, Tapia retreats to presidio. In first letter, Tapia informs comandante he sought help of Opatas in peace negotiations with Apaches and that 30 Sumas arrived but he was unable to outfit them because of shortage of equipment. In second letter, Tapia says Chiricahuas won't negotiate for peace, or release captive soldier Felix Guerra, until Spaniards release Apache prisoners in Chihuahua, especially those held by teniente Ortega in Gallego. Apaches from Sierra Sacramento, Hueco selling firewood to El Paso residents in return for maiz, saying Comanches defeated them at Paraje de San Mateo. Tapia informs Muniz Apaches under Nataneju, Pachatiju meeting Spaniards at Malpais to exchange prisoners, stolen arms taken in raid on puerto de Nogales for fresadas, alesnas y cuchillos. feels it will be very difficult to recover stolen livestock. Muniz (January 19, 1778, Carrizal) replies that exchange okay, but to take arms against Apaches immediately if they break truce. Informs Tapia hostile Apaches stole four horses from his area. (T. Muniz reviews information concerning Apache peace proposals, cautions Tapia not to trust Apaches, lays down 4 major conditions Apaches must accept if peace to be arranged- 1) return of all prisoners; 2) return of all stolen livestock; 3) no communication with Apaches hostile to Spaniards; 4) transfer of any Gileno Apaches accused of stealing livestock, Murdering espanol, mestizo, Castizo, o mulato to Spanish authorities.
