Other folios concern need to divide provinces of Nayarit, Colotlan, and Bolanos into twelve subdelegaciones for administrative purposes. F. 242 mentions perniciosas costumbres de los indios and of benefit of forcing tribute from them. Need to survey and explore provinces of Nayarit and Colotlan needed before administrative division. Commission granted to Zuniga for mapping of area. F. 243 provides income breakdown of region and reasons for intended division. Reasons concern caring for Indians and to simplify administration of region. General command of Provincias Internas under authority of nava and which will now incorporate the virreynato de la peninsula de California, el nuevo reyno de leon y colonia del Nuevo Santander, puertollano's acknowledgement to make any adjustments in running of his missions if necessary, death of bisuete and illness of two other priests, founding of mission de helguera, informs that puertollano is seeking license to go to Spain to recruit 40 priests due to personnel shortage; sealed letter expressing puertollano's desire to avail himself from earlier commitment of sending 5 religiosos to Durango; puertollano stating that the death of bisute and the illness of two other priests is the reason that he seeks to redirect the 5 religiosos from Durango to tamauplia oriental, comments on the deteriorating condition of the mission Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe due to the death and illnesses mentioned and similar complaints lodged by the missions of san Jose and Coahuila as justification for his desire to redirect religious personnel; virrey informing nava on the developments mentioned above and tells him that he has communicated the same to the bishop of Durango; acknowledgement of Lorenzo of developments that will not permit 5 religiosos that he was supposed to receive from the colegio apostolico de pachuca from aiding him; virrey approving lorenzo' request for license to go to Spain to recruit personnel. Vaamonde says Ugalde took troops which were essential for protection against mounting infiltration and threats to missions. Concerns Vaamonde's complaints that his authority is undermined by inefficient division of power. Virrey responds placing Vaamonde in charge of arms, saying he's not subject to Gutierrez' orders. Also orders Ramon and Cueva to join forces. Virrey questions status of Tato, apparently made capitan by deceased governor. Summary
1786 letters concerning necessary military response to recent Indian hostilities. Sierra Gorda says he intends to punish Indians responsible for depredations. says Indians under pretense of peace continue to rob, murder and terrorize. Relates incident in which five shepherds murdered. Concerns deployment of troops to search out enemy. After long campaign hindered by rain, caught up with Apaches in Croix. Virrey responds telling Sierra Gorda to watch carefully for abuses of good faith and to use military to assure compliance with peace conditions. says they must attempt to reduce Camoteros and Tanambres. Sierra Gorda says ranches in Laredo and Revilla completely destroyed and such incidents sure to continue if precautions not taken. Suggests method to make campaigns and punishment more successful. says military organization is inefficient and suggests separation of comandancia general. Informs virrey of plans to take troops to Laredo. Virrey says he's unable to send inspector and requests relacion regarding condition of troops, uniforms, munitions, armaments and horses. Will send Gutierrez to inspect soon. Virrey disagrees with Gorda's suggestions saying the system works and reminds him to obey Ugarte's orders. Gorda informs virrey that several Indians killed in incident in Croix. As a result, Mariguanes request to stay peacefully in Llera mission. says mission in Liebana would accomodate Indians from Croix as proposed by Bucareli. Provides description of daily life in mission. Mentions grain and weekly meat rations. says these provisions not sufficient so better for those Indians to live in liberty. Virrey reminds Gorda of Galvez' instructions of 1786 and 1772 to guide his activities. says by law, funds must be obtained to maintain any group requesting peaceful hospice in mission. Gorda says difficult to follow instructions regarding proper treatment due to increased hostilities. (M. Dannemiller November 1988)

Summary
Concerns publication (book ?), of administrative proceedures sent from conde de Galvez to Ugarte y Loyola regarding the governing of Provincias Internas del oriente and Occidente. Specificies the kind of events the commanders of each province muist report back. Document comprises gives a break down of the many characteristics that Spanish colonization implemented in the conquest of Indian territories. Strategies of the conquest are explained in this document, such as use of Indian controversies to facilitate their reduction. History of how the conquest began is given. Document explains trade Spaniards had with some Indian nations in order to subjugate them. Specific indications of what type of activities were allowed for Indians under Spaniard's domination is given. Characteristics of several Indian nations are provided, such as which one was friendly and/or hostile. (this document is a very important summary of almost all kind of activities the Spanish conqueror had to implement in their fight against tricks used, legislation among provinces, judicial organization, religious strategies etc. Etc.). Summary
Concerns letter from Canaveral to viceroy explaining a whole strategy to accomplish Indians reduction. For this the governor suggests distributing land in Santa Gertrudis, where conditions are good for that purpose, in spite of cold Weather. Plan includes reorganization of presidios and authority in Nayarit (more personnel, new salaries, more supplies etc). Letter describes inaccessible conditions of Nayarit, stubborness of Indians who workship idols and progress being made in their reduction to the crown. Political reorganization of alcaldias in the area is also suggested. (M. Marroquin, April 1989)
