According to vandos, use of Mescal prohibited, and Corbalan will pass orders relating alcohol use to judges. Corbalan thanks Croix for position as governor; Belena's request of approval of chapter of instruction for directing Alamos treasury regarding return of silver and gold approved by Corvalan. Accounting of gold and silver consigned to Echeveste for processing. Report heavy rains ruining crops and mill in Horcasitas, and loss of wheat destined for troops. Request for funds for Sonora expedition and for the Alamos treasury; viceroy informs Corbalan of 4% Alcabala charge; receipt of vandos and description of their contents, including banishment of Jesuits. Echeverte provided with 67o357 pesos and supplies for the expedition, and request for more funds. Accounting of amounts of iron at Alamos factoria and its value. Corbalan informs Croix that he is sending documents on military Inspections of troops to be sent to the expedition, as well as documents on military expenses. Viceroy to Corbalan regarding prohibition of Indian use of alcohol, Indian excesses (robbery, insults) and need for punishment. Delivery of silver late, and discussion of availability of quicksilver. Lack of food supplies in Rosario, and insufficient amounts to supply boats or send to California; Valenzuela appointed capitan and Justica mayor in Mazatan. (L. L. Woodward, July 1989)

Concerns an entire range of mission activities as described by Sonoran leaders to viceroy. Contains many suggestions for administration of missions, mostly on treatment of Indians. Quotes original purpose of conquest as stated by Alexandro VI. expresses need for schools, the teaching of Castellano, written permission for traveling Indians, static position of priests, appointment of two priests in case of illness and even distribution of Spanish population. Discusses the punishment of Indians, prohibiting them from liquor, gambling and salary advances. Describes Indian life and agriculture, their crops, cattle and weavings. Priests want them to establish in towns accessible to church in homes of stone or Adobe which resist fire. Relates difficulties and distances in reaching jobs and transporting goods. States that each Indian should have a horse to hunt Javali with their zaetas and harpoons. Hiaquis are hardworking but basically very lazy so must be given fruitful labor and compensate accordingly to men, women and children over 10. Spanish should not be permitted to buy Indian homes or land. Suggests jobs which benefit others such as in mines. Concerns Indian obligation to church in terms of tribute, priests salary and community building. Asks tithes from Durango be passed to Sonora. Describes gold and silver adornments and wine supplies of some churches and destruction of others due to Zeris and Pimas. Description of trip made by Ganzes to know and convert Indians. Finally, while Indian foreman should be chosen to give priests more freedom, governors should be appointed not elected by Indians. (M. Dannemiller, October 1987)

Decision made not to split presidio forces in order to defend against Indians. Mendinueta relates two major hostile encounters in which Spanish forces destroy rancherias, tiendas and take Indian captives. Mendinueta requests horses and guns for war effort. Mentions possibility of using vecinos in war. Request for arms, horses granted on condition that distribution list of horses is submitted to virrey. Relation of Indian thefts, murders. Corbalan states not enough sugar Cane in provinces to make aguardiente. Since Mescal is regional drink, requests permission to make, regulate Mescal instead. Croix refuses request. Warns drunkenness among Indians must be prevented. (T. Sheridan, 1976)

Topics include: discussion of establishment of caja real in Los Alamos and rent to be paid to owner of house where caja is to be placed; administration of tabaco, polvora, y naipes in Culiacan, Sinaloa and Fuerte; amount of tobacco needed and shipping route; request by Belena to establish estancos of vino mescal in Alamos and other jurisdictions; request denied, mescal is to continue to be prohibited (ff. 292-296); naming of Belena as intendente de provincias.
