Peace attempts with Indians especially Comanches and Tauayas. Tauayas arrive in peace to surrender. Comanche female prisoners involved in peace attempts; Mezieres' efforts to gain peace. Vecinos. Comanche involved in weapons commerce with French. Comanche theft of livestock from missions and vecinos. Mission Indians will be provided as auxiliaries only in case of enemy invasion of town or mission. Suggests advantages of building a fort between Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers to defend area from hostile Indians. Transfer of English castaways from English schooner to Bahia and future plans for them. Concerns use of 29 San Sabas troops for Coahuila and their return. Request for materials to build Quartel. Complaint of lack of troops. Viceroy request for and tables supplied by Ripperda on numbers, ranks and locations of troops in province. Tobar resigns; Cazorla replaces him. Summary
Concerns Thobar's activities and resulting deaths in fight with Indians over horse theft. Controversy about Thobar's insubordination in not requesting fort troops and his request for detachment troops. Comanche theft of horses and oxen from missions. Describes Menchaca's use of troops and Pacheco's retreat from the Colorado River. Apaches are armed and hostile to Comanches. Mentions Demezieres' peace-seeking trip to enemy captains. Suggestions of whether or not Indians should be given arms, but discusses giving of gifts in peacemaking process. Administrative concerns over copies of letters about Demezieres' trip. Concerns need for troops and use of mission Indians to patrol because of diminishing troops due to sickness and death. Mention of Ripperda's marriage and memorial in regard to a brigadier promotion. Menchaca departs to coast with detachment to get Indians for missions of Santa Crus and padres give account of number of Indians acquired. Request for another mission in San Antonio reinforced with Indians and troops. Discussion of postal service and route and time taken to new Orleans. Indian commerce with English in guns and powder. Summary
Discussion of detachment of troops made up of troops from Adaes and Orcoquiza due to fear of return of enemy nations. Viceroy orders movement of presidio to Orcoquiza, 2 padres and soldiers remain in Orcoquiza. Desire to repopulate Ranchos, but distance between Ranchos makes defence difficult, suggestion to plant Ranchos with vecinos together under protection of detachment. Rebuilding of Cuerpo de Guardia, houses, prison. Excesses committed by Indians in Bahia and environs under Thobar thus need of troops from Orcoquiza, Adaes, San Sabas, and friendly Indians to punish barbaros. Plea for Ripperda to keep harmony with thobarand's other captains. Soldiers involved in Bahia road building, protecting entrances, Ranchos. Reports of death of Indians and soldiers. Rich details of history and settlement of missions and presidios near San Fernando. Founding and abandonment of presidio of Texas. Details of Indian invasion of mission of los Adaes, French and Indian fighting against Spanish. Gives geographical limits of province of Texas, describes fruits cultivated, resources for pasturing, construction, water, wildlife, animals, commerce, mining. Discusses war with Apaches and inability to reduce them. Establishment of San Fernando and population figures. Request for troops in San Sabas; cattle, horses, provisions in Adaes due to Indians leaving missions, ranches needing to be reestablished, Indian war hindering exploitation of land, risk of families leaving. Discusses transfers of troops; need for more defense and arms due to Indian raids on ranches stealing cattle and horses. Movement of Indians and troops from mission on Rio San Xavier to Rio San Sabas. Numerous groups of Indians join Tauayas; groups influenced by Comanche attacks. Pelones and other nations limit communication between presidios. Spanish kill Indians, expropriate Indian horses. 200 Indians spotted 3 leagues from presidio. (L. L. Woodward, February 1988)
