Summary
Uranga has spoken with Barrio, Calvo, who want peace. Problems finding competent interpreter to aid negotiations. Calvo says there is good Spanish captain, who has arranged peace with Mezcaleros near Norte. Barrio's band organized to make Mescal, hunt deer while he deals with Uranga. Mention of Calvo's men tracking thieves of oxen from Robledo ranches. Emissaries of virrey sent to negotiate. (A. Dean, March 1989)

Compa established at Janos with small troop of Chiricahuas. Yagonxli, natanfui, other Gilenos in reduccion at Ojos Colorados near Janos. Yagonxli sincerely wants peace, but begs release of his Brother Tagaguechie from chaingang in capital before he will make treaty. Ugarte y Loyola tries to arrange it. Yagonxli, his men on work detail at Janos. Rich exalting nature, death better than humiliation. Also warrior. Letter from Compa to his Father Ugarte y Loyola, part of another page blocking most of content. Draft of letter saying bad idea to make peace with Apaches, preferable to keep trust of Comanches, other tribes who hate Apaches. Suggests capturing all Apaches, shipping adults to Havana. (A. Summary
Tovar sends Ugarte y Loyola a journal of all interactions with Indians at Janos. Describes peace negotiations with Yagonxli, his Father Natanifui, others of their band. Gifts (clothes, maiz, candy, salt, cigars, etcetera) given to all who come to Janos in trade for confidence, cooperation with peace plan. Yagonxli bargains with Tovar for papers to travel to Mimbres. Ugarte y Loyola writes back warning not to get too friendly with Apaches, fears they may incite revolt among other Indians. Draft of letter praising Janos peace with Gilenos, mentions campaign against hostile Indians in Sonora and Nueva Vizcaya. (A. Dean, March 1989)

Letter from Concha to Ugarte y Loyola saying he has consigned friendly Indian nations to guarding less cooperative tribes to maintain peace, requests military try to leave all of them alone, keep Spanish Side of agreement. Other letters discuss meetings with various Indian leaders, violations of peace plan, means of enforcement. Detailed description of two Comanche campaigns on Sierra Blanca Apaches. Mention of seasonal habitation Yutas y Xicarillas. Series of documents dealing with Indian and military Lipanes; peace treaty between Spaniards and Lipanes de Arriba (points of the treaty are included); campaigns against Lipanes de Abajo; capture of Indians who are giving up their weapons and surrender in the presidios; Indian women are taken prisoners; trade of weapons between Indian groups; alliance of Spaniards with subdued Indians; unconditional surrender of Indians who later are used in mission's agriculture; permits and passports given to Indian allies to negotiate with Indians rebels (Lipanes de Abajo); Indians express unhappiness due to extreme harassment by Spanish commander; Indian surrenders who had stabbed a military official. Articles touch on subjects of captives, geographic demarcation of settlement, land, lipane responsibility for making sure that all in their population are within the reduccion, alliance with Spanish, judicial jurisdiction, Castro orders contingent of men and details quantity of munitions and supplies to bring to go to Rio Grande area in order to battle indians; copy of letter that first appeared in file 162ah, i between ff.448-454 describing attack on Castro by escaping lipanes; further information on contingent of men requested by Castro; vaamonde writes to conde de Revilla gigedo presenting a case for the reinstitution of the two companies that were disbanded by ugalde in nuebo reyno de leon; vaamonde writing on the state of affairs with regards to military situation in nuevo leon, makes mention of failed efforts of his predecessor ugalde to reach a durable accord with Apaches, inability of military to properly defend the area, request for weapons.
