Concerns the attempt at reduction of Indians that inhabit the Sierra Madre and to then be under the tutelage of Gallardo and the establishment of missions for this purpose. The reduction of the same Indians mentioned above with the aid of Carin and Rouset de Jesus into the Pueblo of Tecorichi, but after the disturbances in this Pueblo, due to the introduction of this new group, they were transported to San Carlos where they remained for a year and cultivated the land. Retired to their mountains when not given control over Tecorichic. Visit made to the Pueblo of Tecorichic where only two Indians of the group mentioned earlier remained. Spoke with them via interpretors and they agreed to try to convince the others to incorporate themselves into the town. This matter will also involve Rouset de Jesus but with the understanding that no new missions or pueblos are to be established, Indians are to incorporate themselves into existing institutions. Ochoa is the source of census information on Indians in question. Use of listel and Corral stone in enticing the Indians to cooperate at the cost of 500 or 600 pesos. Schedule listing missions and number of Indians baptized there as well as decision that best way to enact the reductions and the conversions would be to send priest into the rancherias and not through the use of force. The money that will be needed to enact the reductions and the conversions have been approved in a plan with specifications provided by Nava. Approval of some involved by resolution of the junta Superior of the real hacienda signed by the fiscales involved. Nava's acknowledgement of orders to proceed with the above plans. (O. Documents deal with the transportation of 47 mecosto Mexico from Tula by Fernandez and at his own expense. Indeed, he says that to cover such costs he had to sell personal articles and is asking to be compensated for such costs. A letter by Garibay acknowledges such costs and it is advised to give Fernandez 200 pesos as compensation. Other aspects of the document speak of previous resettlement of Indians and speak of such resettlement as necessary to educate them, christianize them, and overcome su Gran indocil. there is a letter from conde de Sierra Gorda about a Collera of 121 Indians and he advocates his policy of separating men from women and children. F. 320-321 contains a useful list of Mecos Indians according to names and ages. (P. Lenz, September 1989)

Concerns publication (book ?), of administrative proceedures sent from conde de Galvez to Ugarte y Loyola regarding the governing of Provincias Internas del oriente and Occidente. Specificies the kind of events the commanders of each province muist report back. Document comprises gives a break down of the many characteristics that Spanish colonization implemented in the conquest of Indian territories. Strategies of the conquest are explained in this document, such as use of Indian controversies to facilitate their reduction. History of how the conquest began is given. Document explains trade Spaniards had with some Indian nations in order to subjugate them. Specific indications of what type of activities were allowed for Indians under Spaniard's domination is given. Characteristics of several Indian nations are provided, such as which one was friendly and/or hostile. (this document is a very important summary of almost all kind of activities the Spanish conqueror had to implement in their fight against tricks used, legislation among provinces, judicial organization, religious strategies etc. Etc.). Submits report of Ortega's October 1788 campaign in Sierra Escondida against Apaches. Details tracking and persecution, Spanish custom of decapitating enemy corpses for trophy heads. Relates depredations in San Juan Baptista del Rio, reports use of companias volantes against Apaches Mescaleros. Remarks that because Ugalde's eastern campaign is tying up so many troops, western campaign is forced to make smaller forays. Ugarte y Loyola augments force at Pueblo del Gallo, mentions Taraumara hostilities in Cianori. Martinez report from Sacramento mountains outlines force organization in table, gives daily report, detailing route taken and tracking activities, names officers, tallies weight of supplies carried by each company, mentions use of Opatas in force, notes custom of turning in Indian ears as battle trophies, laments paucity of pasture and water due to drought. Includes table of wounded and sick. Medina reports Indian attacks on sheperds near Mapimi (August 1788). Mentions Mescal as sustenance, and use of Apache and Opata auxiliaries. Details route taken, use of women (Indian ?) As guides. Missionaries send certifications of faulias visits to their missions, explaining that Faulia treated everyone with justice.
